At the end of July, Bucks Men and Women competed in the amazing competition that is County Week. Playing against a different county each day, contesting 9 rubbers versus each county over 5 days, it’s a marathon event that takes a special kind of player to be able to commit and endure the week.
Bucks Women travelled to Cromer to compete in Group, with 10 players representing the team throughout the week, battling it out on hard, astroturf and grass courts during to the varying weather conditions. Ice baths in the sea helped the team with their post-match recovery and it was great to see the varied age of competitors within the team. Last time the women’s team was in Cromer in 2023 they achieved promotion, so the team were looking to repeat this!
Tough conditions on Day 1 meant all matches against Leicestershire were played on the hard courts. Bucks were 5-0 up with play ending at 8.30pm. Day 2 was a long day with the match to finish against Leicestershire and then a full match against Avon. A battle but nice to be back on the grass and the team got the wins they wanted, 7-2 and 9-0!!
Wednesday was against West of Scotland, we had 3 established doubles pairings and every pair picked up wins so the result went to Bucks 5-4! Day 4/5 saw mixed weather conditions with the team finishing against Berkshire at 10pm and the last round of matches being played Friday morning. Grit and determination from the team was shown when they bounced back from a 5-4 loss to Berkshire to beat Gloucestershire 5-1. This secured promotion to Group 2!!
Well done to Laura and Jemima who were undefeated over 2/3 days. Alexa won 12 of 14, Izzy 11 of 14, Aneka 11 of 14 and Millie 10 of 14. Every team member competed during the week and contributed to the overall win. Even a broken finger didn’t stop them! A special thanks to the captains throughout the week in Jemima, Izzy and Alexa. Passion, energy, commitment and dedication always shining through. This is supposedly Jemima’s last year captaining and playing for the team after 106 days of county week action. Perhaps she will be back!
