After relegation in 2024, the men’s team were looking to bounce back and earn promotion from Group 5A. They started the week with a big 5-0 win over the Channel Islands. Aidan and Jack comfortably winning both singles rubbers, while Sam and Martin sealed the win in the first doubles rubber. Christopher would step in for round 2, meaning all 5 players got a win to start the weekend, a massive boost before the crunch match against Somerset.
Somerset had introduced two strong 34 year old players into their team this year and that would prove the difference in the tie. Aidan narrowly missed out 4-10 in a match tiebreak at number 1 singles and unfortunately we ended in a 2-3 loss. A different result in the tiebreak could have changed the course of the weekend, as the team beat Gloucestershire 3-1 on the Sunday to finish second. The level of the event is getting stronger, for other counties Alex Ward and Dan Cox made their debuts, both have only just finished playing professionally and were ranked top 300 in the ATP.
A great weekend where we were able to present Sam Butler with his county colours and after a great stint as captain, Aidan has passed the baton on to Jack Slaughter. Jack has captained GB so is an ideal captain for us and we thank Aidan for all that he has done in organising the team for the last few years.
Team: Aidan Graveson (c), Sam Butler, Christopher Gedge, Martin Sedzmak, Jack Slaughter
