Bucks County Closed 2017

Bucks County Closed kicked off on the 27th August, with the orange ball event being held at the Bucks Indoor Tennis Centre. An early start for the 9U boys, but there was some really competitive tennis shown by several marathon tiebreaks. With 26 players competing in the 9U competitions, it was a busy day, but eventually we had our winners, with both Nathan Baggett and Emily Marshall winning their finals in 3 sets.

On the Bank Holiday Monday, we arrived at Great Missenden, for a busy day with the start of the 14Us and 18Us singles competitions. We had very strong entries in the 14U boys, with 24 players from across the county, however the 18U girls was on the other end of the spectrum, with just 3 entrants for a round robin. One key target for 2018 is to increase the number of girls’ entries in the elder categories, however it was great to see them playing on the grass this year. Alexa Wilson was our first winner of the week at Great Missenden.

Tuesday was even busier with 14U and 18U singles in the morning and a lot of doubles in the afternoon. 8 pairs in the boys 14U and 6 pairs in the girls 14U was a strong showing and great to watch. We also crowned two more county champions on Tuesday, as the 10U green ball competition was run. There were 18 entrants, with a lot of parents and coaches about, but thanks to all of our helpers for keeping an eye out and helping the event to run smoothly. Congratulations to Ethan Taank and Helena Ullyatt on their victories.

Sadly, Wednesday afternoon was a complete washout, delaying the start of the 16U, but we had managed to get two rounds of the 12U finished in the morning, before the torrential rain started. This left us praying for good weather the rest of the week, as we needed to fit in the 12U, 16U and a lot of doubles. We also took up two courts on the Friday to run the 8U red event, which saw some great, fun tennis from our promising youngsters. Well done to Harry Cornhill and Alessia Mccormick on their wins.

Fortunately, we were lucky and although Thursday and Friday were busy, we also had time to introduce a new event. One of our key aims is to increase participation at County Closed, by providing more competition for players with higher ratings. This year we trialled an invitational event on the Friday for some of the 14U boys, which gave players with a 9.1 to 10.2 rating the chance to compete against players of a similar standard. The trial went fantastically, the four boys played a round robin tournament with abbreviated sets and all loved it, so we hope to roll this out at more age groups next year.

Finals day on the Saturday was extremely enjoyable and we must thank Jill, Kate and Neil from Great Missenden for their hospitality all week. The standard of tennis was very high across all the age groups, although sadly an incredible 18U boys final was cut short when Daniel Dean suffered a nasty looking injury, but he was soon up on his feet and is ok now. Congratulations must go to all our winners (see the winners’ list) and exciting news for the 12U winners, who were invited to play in the Babolat Cup at Edgbaston Priory Club, where they can win a trip to Roland Garros. Thanks to everybody who played in County Closed for entertaining us all week and thanks to the parents and coaches for their support. Also, we must thank our referees Ann Dewick and Janet and Malcolm Jamieson for running the event and Great Missenden Lawn Tennis Club and the Bucks Indoor Tennis Centre for hosting. See you next year!
